Character Name: Corvus Corax
Canon: Warhammer 40,000
Canon Background: http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Corvus_Corax, http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Corvus_Corax#.UBdKG7RYtDQ
AU Background: Corvus Corax was a child designed by the Emperor of Man. Called a Primarch, he was made to be far more than a man. Given great gifts of intellect, wit, strength and other assorted abilities, he was meant to be a great general and warrior - fit to lead a legion of superhuman soldiers. Unfortunately, before the Emperor could finish the project, the young primarchs were magically transported across the lands by unknown forces.
Corax found himself in the city of Kiavahr. Kiavahr was a city of slaves, oppressed by their neighbor city-state. As Corax grew up amongst the slaves, he learned an intense hatred for slavers and their ilk and, when an adult, led a guerilla war which was successful in destroying the grip of the slavers and restoring freedom to Kiavhar. The former slaves renamed their city to "Deliverance" and named Corax their saviour. Shortly thereafter, the Emperor's crusade came to Deliverance, and Corax was reunited with his father. In return for the further protection of the city, Corax swore his fealty to the Emperor of Man, and was given command of a legion of Adeptus Astartes - the superhuman soldiers of the Emperor.
All went well, with Corax leading his legion, the Raven Guard, in the great crusade of the Emperor. Many victories were won and much of the realm was brought into the empire. However, the warmaster Horus, one of the other primarchs and the Emperor's favored son, was enthralled by dark forces and turned traitor to the great Emperor. The Raven Guard, along with numerous other legions, were sent to the city of Istvaan to squash the traitors. Little did they know that many of the other legions which walked alongside them were allied with Horus. When the betrayal came, the Raven Guard and two other legions were horrendously devastated - taking casualties on an almost unprecedented scale. Corax was able to escape with the remnants of his legion, but only barely.
Seeking a way to rebuild his legion and get revenge against Horus and the other traitors, Corax returned to the heart of the empire, requesting audience with the Emperor. After speaking to his father, he was given access to the magics and technology that the Emperor had used to create the primarchs and astartes. With these, Corvus hoped to rebuild his legions with great speed and crush Horus for his treachery.
Unfortunately, this would not come to pass. An impurity introduced into the process rendered the new astartes into monstrocities - abominations with horrible mutations. When the war came to an end, Corvus struggled with guilt over this, and eventually euthanized the surviving mutants, granting them peace. After cloistering himself in the Ravenspire for a time, Corvus was last seen charging into the Rift, seeking to redeem himself through eternal battle.
Centuries later, a large man in black winged armor emerges from the Rift...
Personality: Corax is a brooding figure, often preferring to keep his own counsel. Though he may take advice from others, he takes orders from very few, specifically the Emperor and those that the Emperor deems to put above Corax on the hierarchy. However, it is important to realize that while he may see himself as above normal men, he does not look down upon them. Owing in part to his childhood, Corax has compassion for normal people, and for this reason liberated Kiavhar from its oppressors.
There are two things that Corax despises beyond all others: traitors to the cause he fights for and slavers. Both he will kill on sight, showing no mercy and no forgiveness. Indeed, in such cases, his rage rises to the forefront, which is truly a horrible sight. While his rage is mighty, he is not without fear. Though he fears not death, he does know fear of corruption and of becoming a tyrant, much like his brothers did long ago. Though he knows that he would never do this, a certain level of dread is harbored in his mind. This dread is not helped by the feelings of guilt he has over the actions he felt forced to take during the war against Horus. Though the monstrous legionarries may have been abominations, they were all loyal and fought with valor and distinction. Having turned them into such creatures felt like a betrayal to Corax, and for this he has yet to forgive himself.
Despite all this, Corax can from time to time prove to have a sense of humor. He will exchange barbs and quips with his officers on occasion, and even laughs once in a blue moon! That said, his humor is often dark, as he is very much a military man, command and conquest being what he was made for. He would feel much more at home planning an attack or charging across the field of battle than he ever would when dealing with goverment or bureaucracy. Somewhat secretive, you will often only find out about what he is thinking if he wants you to.
Combat Style: Corvus Corax's tactical doctrine was taught to him through experience as a child. Creating a slave rebellion, he quickly mastered the art of guerilla warfare - strike where your enemy does not see you, and escape before they can bring retribution upon you. With this doctrine, the Raven Guard won many wars and fought off armies many times their size. It was often said that when severely damaged, the Raven Guard did not get desperate - they only became more dangerous. Keeping with this doctrine, the Raven Guard made extensive use of magitechnical jump packs, allowing their soldiers to move great distances with speed, crashing down upon their enemy with a devastating force.
Corax himself has a pair of ornate black wings upon his heavy armor, allowing him to leap through the sky with ease. He carries with him a bolter (the signature firearm of the astartes), a clawed gauntlet which can energize itself with a sheath of power around the claws -drastically increasing their threat, and a barbed whip with a magical charge at the end - capable of slicing through armor with ease. Though he used to be a demigod of battle, able to punch through a steel wall with his lightning talons, his prolonged time in the Rift has had unfortunate side effects in reducing his once legendary strength. It is still worthy of an astartes, but is no longer the godly might of a primarch.
Preferring to strike from a position of concealment, Corax is a master of stealth, despite his titanic size. contributing to this is an ability that the Emperor designed into his very being: When Corax wishes not to be noticed, he will be seen by others as an ordinary man. Though this will not allay suspicion when walking in to a restricted area, it does permit him to walk in a crowd and remain unnoticed. Other gifts given to him by the Emperor (and to all primarchs) include enhanced senses which can detect things as minute as the chemical makeup of the air, and agility unbefitting his mighty frame.
Kingdom or Faction: Rome. Passive for now, but will become active once he gets situated.
Primary Role: Commander
Soldier or Siege Company: Hidden in a secret chamber underneath the Ravenspire are a number of magically powered stasis pods, containing a company's worth of Raven Guard. These soldiers are Astartes, comparable to Garviel's Ultramarines - except with more of an emphasis on stealth and guerilla tactics. They have jump packs mounted on their armor, and wicked claws in addition to the standard Astartes bolt pistol.

Tarot Cards: Past: The Tower, Present:The Hermit,Future: Judgement
Title: Lord Corvus Corax, Primarch of the Raven Guard, Savior of Deliverance
Artifacts: The Ravenspire. The Ravenspire was the fortress of the Raven Guard, originally a fortress for the slavers that preyed upon Kiavhar, with a massive black watchtower in the center. Over the centuries, with none to look after it, time has not been kind to the Ravenspire, and most of it now lies in ruins. However, a few secret chambers are still hidden beneath the tower, containing soldiers held in magical stasis, a small armory for said troops, and equipment necessary for creating more Astartes. This equipment's stasis enchantments have failed, however, and will require prolonged repair before they are ready for use.
I would like the ruins of the Ravenspire and the troops held within it to be available to Corax in the beginning. As time progresses and he gains more influence, I would like to see the fortress rebuilt, and eventually, the equipment for making new Astartes returned to functioning order. The troops are simply to be his starting allotment of soldiers. The fortress can act as a base for Roman forces when repaired, and the equipment for making Astartes can create elite shock troops for the country - with the secret of how it functions being something the characters can fight over. Whoever can replicate the process will also be able to create equally mighty soldiers.
Sample Post:
Your liege has called upon you to perform a task of great importance. Upon what do you rely to complete it?
My liege has given me my gifts for exactly such a purpose. I rely on my wits, my skills and what forces I have. They will be more than enough.
Your rival in court knows something that you do not, and this knowledge is giving them the advantage. How do you address this issue?
I learn what they know, and how they know it. It is important to remain on the offensive. To give it up is to give up the flow of events.
Why do you deserve to rule this land?
I do not. I am a general, a warlord and a soldier. I am no diplomat, governor or monarch. I lead soldiers but have little interest in politicking or economic matters. There are others better suited for it than myself.
What is god to you?
God is a lie. Religion is foolishness, brought on my man's weakness.
It is the eve of a great battle, and the troops have made camp for the night. Where are you and what are you doing?
My troops do not make camp for the night. We strike during it. After that, we do not stay around long enough to make camp. We move out and redeploy, not permitting the enemy a chance to strike back.
The pressures of court have become too much for you to bear, what do you do?
They have not. I am made stronger than that. To cave under something so miniscule would be an insult to my father, the Emperor of all mankind.
You are given the opportunity to bet everything you have for great fortune, should you win you will be granted the wealth of kings but should you lose you will lose everything. What do you do?
I decline. What worth is wealth? I have all that I need in that which has been given me.
For what cause are you willing to sacrifice yourself?
The defense of man, and vengeance for my lost brethren. To crush oppressors as they crush the oppressed and to see my great father's works be done.
What vices keep you from achieving your true potential?
Rage, and perhaps fear. Rage can cloud one's judgement and has... done so in the past. Fear of death is nothing, but fear of becoming a monster, or of failing my liege... this is harder to overcome.
Everything you love and held dear has been taken from you in the blink of an eye. What do you do?
You should pity the poor fool who dares do this to me, Corvus Corax. I do not fall easily, and only become more dangerous the less I have. I am skilled in fighting an enemy with a significant advantage, and I will have my revenge.
